From 2024 to the summer of 2026, Kader Attia and Elizabeth Peyton are the hosts of the Louvre. Kader Attia (born 1970 in Dugny; based in Paris and Berlin) is known for his work at the boundary of form and reflection, between a sensitive inquiry and contemporary thought. Elizabeth Peyton (born 1965 in Connecticut; based in Paris and New York) explores painting through the art of portraiture.
For two years, they inhabited the physical and imagined spaces of the Louvre. There they had a studio, created there, conversed with its teams, and were part of its audiences.
Neighbors by virtue of their studios, they now share the exhibition space in the Chapel Hall to reveal the results of their respective journeys at the museum: the film and the installation for Kader Attia are inspired by his own intimate engagement with the institution, contemplating the flux of eras, memories, and gazes, making the gaze an object. Elizabeth Peyton's paintings and drawings are as many reinterpretations of Louvre works, created since her earliest years, alongside depictions of subjects that traverse history and the contemporary, in her palace studio.
Their mutual readings of the institution reveal the museum's resources and the works it preserves, a source of creation for artists as well as for every visitor.
