For a decade, Sheer Mag has carved out a place in contemporary rock, moving from a “group of connoisseurs” to the immediate punch of popular songs. On Playing Favorites, the band’s third album and first for Third Man Records, this matured vision is fully on display: a dense record, carried by strong emotions, massive choruses, and crafted power-pop anthems. Born after a difficult period, the album transforms the chaos of daily life, the nights, the parties, love and loss into music that is at once complex and accessible. Between disco, Americana, glam and rock’n’roll, Sheer Mag explores new textures without losing the sound that is distinctly theirs.
With Playing Favorites, Sheer Mag pushes its approach to rock toward more cinematic territories, while embracing its taste for catchy refrains. From the romance of Moonstruck to the melancholy of Golden Hour, via the explosive power-pop of Don’t Come Looking and the psychedelic triptych of Mechanical Garden, the band broadens its palette. Not a retreat to roots, but rather the culmination of promises sketched out over ten years.
Alvilda
Alvilda, or the praise of simplicity: four female musicians who indulge themselves, influenced as much by 60’s garage as by 77 punk. We’d categorize this as power pop. Two-and-a-half-minute songs, angular and energetic pop gems. And then there is the joy of playing together, as evident as it is contagious.
Narkose (DE)
Narkose is a German punk band formed in 2023 in the Ruhr area. The band plays aggressive, dark and committed deutschpunk, blending hardcore and post-punk influences. Their music stands out for fast, catchy instrumentals, impactful lyrics, sometimes deliberately excessive, and intense live performances. Their debut album, Überleben-Koexistenz, released in autumn 2024, gathers 13 raw tracks that evoke frustration, madness and a sense of being at a dead end.
