Born in Belfast, he first left his mark on the sixties rhythm and blues scene as the singer of Them, before launching his solo career and establishing a highly personal approach to writing, blending soul, folk, blues, jazz, and Celtic echoes. On stage, everything begins with the voice: free phrasing, nourished by gospel and improvisation, capable of tipping a song in a few measures into longer, more meditative territories.
From the single “Brown Eyed Girl” to albums that have become touchstones such as Astral Weeks and Moondance, his catalog alternates tight formats with tracks that take their time, with that knack for stretching themes, reigniting the groove, establishing tension and then letting it break.
