The Tubs
Jangle pop (UK)
The Tubs, a Welsh group based in London, blend post-punk, British folk, and jangly guitars, somewhere between Flying Nun and tense pub rock.
With “Cotton Crown,” they darken the theme without relinquishing the hooks: a more personal, bolder record where everything collides—the urgency of Hüsker Dü, pop melancholy, and razor-sharp writing. Owen “O” Williams, often likened to Richard Thompson, digs into his obsessions (love, malaise, social shame) until a finale haunted by the death of his mother, the singer Charlotte Greig.
The strength of the album lies in this contrast: dark lyrics carried by an immediate pop euphoria. The guitars roam between Johnny Marr, Pentangle, and a contemporary shine reminiscent of The 1975, while the rhythm section pounds like Guided by Voices on a night of great intoxication.
