While working on Interplay, Ride took stock: since their 2015 reunion, Andy Bell, Mark Gardener, Steve Queralt and Laurence “Loz” Colbert have now been active longer than during the band’s original run. That second life wasn’t about nostalgia so much as reconnecting with the chemistry that made them a key name in late-80s/early-90s British guitar music: two interlaced guitars, shared vocals, and a rhythm section that keeps everything moving while the sound blooms.
Interplay pulls together the different threads of their catalogue, from frenzied guitar attacks and hypnotic grooves to those hazy, melodic hooks. The newer material also opens the palette, nodding to sleek 80s pop touchstones like Tears For Fears, Talk Talk and early U2, without losing Ride’s signature blur of drive and atmosphere.
