Info
On 17 November 2026 at Union Chapel in London, saxophonist Sam Gendel and bassist Sam Wilkes bring their long-running duo to the stage. Their set sits close to jazz but moves freely, favouring hushed dynamics, circular motifs and grooves that open up space. Themes surface, bend and recede, with electronics and effects folding into the acoustic dialogue.
Sam Gendel works across alto sax and wind controllers, shaping a personal tone through processing, repetition and collage. Between projects like Satin Doll, Fresh Bread and Cookup, he has refined a language that blurs standards, R&B memory and improvisation. He is also a frequent collaborator, from Vampire Weekend and Perfume Genius to Laurie Anderson and Blake Mills.
Sam Wilkes is a bassist, composer and producer whose playing centres on melodic low-end, pocket and a feel for empty space. His solo records Wilkes, One Theme & Subsequent Improvisation and Driving sketch a path between jazz, funk, ambient textures and a quiet, song-led side. Along the way he has worked with KNOWER, Chaka Khan, Dijon and Jacob Collier.
Together, Gendel and Wilkes have built a duo voice across Music for Saxofone & Bass Guitar, its follow-up More Songs, and The Doober. Live, they lean on trust and clear lines: bass figures loop and shift, sax phrases grain and glide, electronics tint the edges. It is a set shaped in real time, grounded in years of playing side by side.
