Info
On 17 June 2026 at Royal Festival Hall in London, composer, vibraphonist and multi-instrumentalist Mulatu Astatke revisits the music that earned him the title father of Ethio-jazz. Since the late 1960s he has shaped a sound where Ethiopian modes meet jazz and Latin rhythms, a blend first heard in the Swinging Addis years and developed over six decades on stage and in the studio.
The set draws on cornerstones such as Yèkèrmo Sèw and Yègellé Tezeta, with extended grooves, modal horns and the shimmer of vibraphone alongside traditional instruments used in new contexts. Beyond leading his own groups, Astatke has long worked as an arranger for major Ethiopian artists, and his path crossed with figures like Duke Ellington during the bandleader’s tour of Ethiopia. This concert traces that journey through classic themes and fresh arrangements, focusing on the measured, hypnotic flow that defines his approach.
