May Communion Club Night

Californian songwriter and producer Marlon Funaki brings his shape-shifting psych-pop to The Social, London, on 21 May 2026. Raised on jazz-band drums and self-taught guitar, he builds songs where melody leads, folding alternative rock textures into R&B-leaning rhythms and a jazz-tinged harmonic touch. Working largely DIY — writing, recording, mixing and finishing his tracks himself — he sculpts arrangements that keep the focus on feel and harmony over flash.

On stage, this turns into a fluid set that drifts from woozy, chorus-soaked guitars to head-nod soul pulses, with shifts in tempo and dynamics rather than big solos. Hooks settle in slowly, layered vocals swerve around rhythmic grooves, and the guitar plays with colour more than speed. Coming up through house parties and warehouse rooms before moving to venues and festivals in the US and UK, Funaki has shaped a show tuned to intimate spaces: close, rhythmic, and responsive to the room.
