Fat Freddy's Drop: 21st Anniversary of Based on a True Story

Fat Freddy’s Drop head to London to mark 21 years of Based on a True Story, the debut that introduced the Wellington collective’s mix of reggae, dub and soul. On 23 October 2026 at Alexandra Palace, the seven-piece dives back into that first chapter with what defines them live: extended grooves, horn lines that weave and release, and a rhythm section locked to a patient pulse. Joe Dukie’s warm, unhurried voice holds the centre while Fitchie sculpts the sound in real time; keys, guitar and horns trade space so the songs breathe and shift.

Formed in 1999, the group has long built its shows on improvisation, stretching studio cuts without losing the sway. The BOATS material leaves plenty of headroom—slow-burn bass, offbeat skank, dub echoes—so the stage becomes where the tracks find new shapes.
