Info
On 14 August 2026, Scarborough Open Air Theatre in Scarborough hosts an evening of British synth-pop with Holly Johnson, ABC and Heaven 17.
Holly Johnson brings the unmistakable voice of Frankie Goes to Hollywood. From Relax, Two Tribes and The Power of Love to solo cuts like Love Train and Americanos, his set navigates punchy dance-pop and melodic electronics with a sharp pop sensibility. A fixture of Liverpool’s late-70s scene turned chart frontman, he now mixes FGTH essentials with tracks from Blast, Soulstream and Europa.
ABC, led by Martin Fry, revisit the sleek pop writing that defined The Lexicon of Love and its orchestral sheen. Expect the crisp hooks of The Look of Love and Poison Arrow alongside later favourites like When Smokey Sings. Born from Sheffield’s early-80s new pop, ABC blend synth textures, funk touches and polished arrangements designed for big choruses.
Heaven 17, formed after the first Human League split, centre on Glenn Gregory and Martyn Ware’s blend of electronic programming, funk-leaning basslines and pointed lyrics. Temptation, Fascist Groove Thang and Come Live with Me map their shift from political edge to refined melodicism. On stage, their catalogue locks into a tight, rhythmic pulse that channels club energy and new wave attitude.
