David Essex comes to Newcastle with a set that traces his path from London stages to the pop charts. Born David Albert Cook in Plaistow and raised in Canning Town, he started as a drummer and singer in local bands before breaking through in Godspell in 1971, then on screen in That'll Be the Day. Rock On (1973) set the tone: a supple voice, glam-tinged basslines and a taste for storytelling. Through the 70s he shifted toward a more melodic pop rock across albums like David Essex, All the Fun of the Fair, Out on the Street and Imperial Wizard, while keeping one foot in musical theatre with Tommy, Jeff Wayne's Musical Version of The War of the Worlds and Evita. On stage he links chart staples with deeper cuts and theatre moments, shaped by his narrative pop approach and a band sound rooted in glam, pop and rock'n'roll.
