Azymuth

Since the 1970s, Azymuth has been shaping a distinctive sound, the samba doido — a tightly woven fusion of jazz-funk and samba. Fifty years on the road, more than thirty albums, and a new chapter with Marca Passo, the first studio album since the death of Ivan “Mamão” Conti in 2023, following that of José Roberto Bertrami in 2012. At New Morning, Paris, on 15 October 2026, the trio appears in its current lineup: Alex Malheiros on bass, who carries the group’s legacy; Dudu Viana on keyboards, who has worked with Roberto Menescal, Marcos Valle and João Bosco; and Renato Massa on drums, heard alongside Marcos Valle and Ed Motta.

On stage, supple bass lines, melodic keyboards and an incisive drum kit create wide spaces for improvisation, sitting between jazz, funk, samba and urban sounds. Azymuth’s trajectory has also nourished club and electronic culture through collaborations with 4hero, Madlib and Jazzanova, and remixes by Theo Parrish, Ron Trent, Global Communication and Daniel Maunick. The live show is conceived as a journey between classics and new material, held together by that elastic groove.
