Hypnotic Brass Ensemble

On July 8, 2026 at the New Morning, Hypnotic Brass Ensemble brings to Paris its Chicago-born brass family, direct heirs of Phil Cohran, the trumpeter who once played with the Sun Ra Arkestra. Formed very young, schooled on the street and through impromptu gigs, the brothers have forged a tight collective sound in which the trumpet and trombone sections lead the way. Now backed by guitar and bass, they broaden their spectrum: jazz and hip‑hop as the backbone, funk and rock for propulsion, R&B and New Orleans brass as support, with touches of house or soca depending on the mood. On stage it’s a matter of call-and-response, block brass riffs, insistent hooks and meticulously timed breaks—a rhythmic approach that drives straight ahead while leaving room for solos. The band has released a series of landmark albums, including Bad Boys of Jazz in 2020, and has worked with Mos Def, Tony Allen, Gorillaz and Wu‑Tang Clan—encounters that have honed this urban brass band. An evening to witness live how these heirs seamlessly weave the continuity of African‑American musical traditions.
