On 25 November 2026 at Le Rockstore in Montpellier, GoGo Penguin presents Necessary Fictions. The Mancunian trio — Chris Illingworth on piano, Nick Blacka on bass and Jon Scott on drums — pushes further their blend of jazz, composition inspired by classical music and electronic influences. This new chapter incorporates modular synthesizers, a Moog Grandmother and an electric bass, and seamlessly shifts the set between acoustic instruments and electronic textures. Repetitive motifs, melodic bass lines and prominent drumming structure pieces that play with tension and dynamics, in an approach tailored for live performance.
Also on the bill, Daudi Matsiko offers a more stripped-back side. The British-Ugandan singer-songwriter relies on precise fingerpicking, a gentle vocal delivery and introspective lyrics to create intimate, nuanced folk. His recent songs extend this minimal, sensitive songwriting, echoing GoGo Penguin’s musical world. Between electronic pulses and voice-and-guitar presentation, the evening brings together two ways of sculpting time and sonic material, united by a shared concern for clarity and detail.
