Lyle Lovett and his Small Large Band

Lyle Lovett brings his Small Large Band to the Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium in Calgary on September 10, 2026. Raised in Klein, Texas, the songwriter has spent four decades threading country roots through folk, western swing, blues, jazz and gospel. His writing leans on keen observation with a dry twist, and his voice slips easily from lean acoustic tales to fuller, horn-shaped arrangements.

From his late-80s start (Lyle Lovett, Pontiac) to the expanded canvas of Lyle Lovett and His Large Band, he’s kept a steady dialogue between Texas traditions and American songcraft. Joshua Judges Ruth and The Road to Ensenada sharpened that blend; Step Inside This House nodded to fellow Texas writers; later albums like Natural Forces, Release Me and 12th of June show the same balance on record and on stage.

With the Small Large Band, the swing sits close to the storytelling: a tight group feel, brass adding color, grooves with a western swing tint, and space for the ballads to land clear and close.
