Info

John Scofield and Gerald Clayton meet face to face for a guitar-and-piano duo in which listening guides every turn. See them on May 11, 2026, at the New Morning in Paris. A generation separates them, but their common ground is broad: improvisation to the fore, a flexible repertoire ranging from reworked standards to original themes.

An American guitarist active since the 1970s, John Scofield has long bridged blues, jazz, funk and rock. A member of Miles Davis’s band in the early 1980s, he has also played with Charles Mingus, Michael Brecker and Brad Mehldau. His playing blends gritty riffs, singing lines and an elastic groove, with a tonal sense that gives each idea room to breathe.

A pianist and composer signed to Blue Note and a multiple Grammy nominee, Gerald Clayton forges a path between bop heritage and modern harmonies. A collaborator of Charles Lloyd, Roy Hargrove, Dianne Reeves and already of Scofield, he moves forward with a clear touch and a strong sense of group dynamics. His album Ones & Twos, released in 2025, continues this taste for dialogue and open form.

As a duo they prioritize conversation: pared-down melodies, counter-melodies, flashes of blues and rhythmic tensions. A format that exposes every detail of their playing and lets the music breathe.
