American Football

American Football brings its finely woven songs to The Concert Hall in Toronto on August 8, 2026. Formed in the late 1990s in Champaign-Urbana, the group built a singular space between indie rock, Midwest emo and math rock. Mike Kinsella, Steve Lamos and Steve Holmes shaped a sound of interlocking clean guitars, shifting time signatures, muted trumpet lines and introspective vocals, with an approach that favors tension, detail and quiet dynamics.

After an early EP and a first self-titled album in 1999, the band paused, then returned to the stage in 2014 as their debut slowly found a wider audience. Two more albums followed, also self-titled, in 2016 and 2019, opening their palette with denser arrangements and guest voices like Hayley Williams and Elizabeth Powell. On stage today, American Football plays around a core trio expanded for live shows, letting the guitars loop and breathe while rhythms tilt and resolve.
