On 3 July 2026, Orchestra Baobab will perform Made in Sénégal at Schloss Neuhardenberg in Neuhardenberg. The group formed in the early 1970s in Dakar as the house band of the Club Baobab and represents a style that blends Afro-Cuban rhythms with Wolof traditions, Manding influences and nuances of Afro‑Portuguese song culture. It is characterised by interlocking guitars, flexible horn lines and multilingual vocals in Wolof, Bambara or Creole. After intense years through the mid‑1980s the band took a hiatus, before returning around 2000 — accompanied by the reissue of Pirate’s Choice, the album Specialist in All Styles with guests such as Youssou N’Dour and Ibrahim Ferrer, and later Made in Dakar and Tribute to Ndiouga Dieng. Live, the collective fuses Dakar’s urban dance-orchestra tradition with rumba phrases and long, breathing grooves. The set traces the history and present of this Senegalese formation.
