In the year 816, Viking ships sailed up the waters of the Shannon estuary until they reached the island of Inis Cathaig. Hidden from view, that monastic sanctuary still believed it could resist. It did not. The sacred walls were desecrated, the place stripped of its riches, and the island forever marked by the violence of the raids from the north.
