David Lee Murphy
Born in Herrin, Illinois, David Lee Murphy moved to Nashville in 1983 and developed an American country style steeped in honky‑tonk and country‑rock, with songs built around concrete situations, straightforward choruses and highly narrative lyrics. He drew attention in the mid‑1990s on MCA Nashville with “Party Crowd” and “Dust on the Bottle”, then continued the momentum with “Every Time I Get Around You” and “The Road You Leave Behind”. His discography includes Gettin’ Out the Good Stuff (1996), Tryin’ to Get There (2004) and No Zip Code (2018). After his initial period as a performer, Murphy largely refocused on songwriting and co‑wrote songs recorded by Kenny Chesney, Jason Aldean, Thompson Square and Jake Owen, which firmly established his presence in Nashville’s country songwriting scene. His career alternates between personal releases and work for other artists, with a solo comeback marked by “Loco” in 2004 and by No Zip Code in 2018, an album made with Kenny Chesney and Buddy Cannon that features the duet “Everything’s Gonna Be Alright”.
