If you’ve never seen The Dead South live, expect a true road band: four guys from Regina, Saskatchewan, who play tight and fast, with their own distinctive way of twisting bluegrass, folk, and Americana. Banjos, mandolin, guitars, cello: the instrumental remains rootsy, but the energy is closer to punk than to a traditional parlour show. Their vocal harmonies snap, the rhythms take off, and black humor flickers through songs about derailments, rural myths, and conscious bad choices.
Having become a fixture since In Hell I’ll Be in Good Company, the quartet (Nate Hilts, Scott Pringle, Colton Crawford, Danny Kenyon) also relies on a repertoire that traverses Good Company, Illusion & Doubt, Sugar & Joy, and Chains & Stakes, between tradition kept intact and contemporary, boundary-pushing twists.
