Info
On 3 October 2026 at Papillon in Southampton, Stereo MC’s bring their hybrid of hip‑hop, funk and club electronics back on stage. Formed in the mid-eighties by childhood friends Rob Birch and Nick Hallam, the London outfit started out DIY, pressing their first 12” and kickstarting Gee Street Records alongside Richie Rich and Jon Baker. That spirit fed into their debut 33-45-78 (1989) and Supernatural (1990), before Connected (1992) pushed their sound into wider orbit with tracks like Connected, Step It Up, Creation and Ground Level.
Built on rap cadences, sung refrains and tight grooves, their music moves between house pulses, funk basslines and UK hip-hop textures without sticking to a single template. The group has a long history of mixing machines with live players on tour, a balance that shaped their early gigs and still colours their approach on stage. Beyond their own releases, they’ve left a mark with remixes for U2, Queen Latifah, Madonna or Tricky, and later projects like DJ-Kicks (2000), Deep Down & Dirty (2001), Paradise (2005), Double Bubble (2008) and Emperor’s Nightingale (2011) traced the arc of a band in constant motion.
