Put on Julia, Julia Cumming’s debut solo album, and the very first notes you hear are her voice. Clear, unadorned — a crisp declaration of her emancipation. In a matter of seconds she asserts her autonomy in song; her fingers rest on the piano and draw out a few extremely spare chords.
