Matt Berninger, the baritone voice and lyric pen behind The National, plays Jack Singer Concert Hall in Calgary on March 14, 2026. Cincinnati-born and long tied to Brooklyn’s indie scene, he’s shaped a dark, melodic strain of indie rock tinted with folk and alternative colors, writing about private tensions, family ties and the pulse of urban life. Away from the band, he formed EL VY with Brent Knopf, releasing Return to the Moon in 2015, a project with a more direct, pop-leaning edge. He then opened a solo chapter with Serpentine Prison in 2020, a songwriter record with restrained arrangements, American rock undertones and discreet soul inflections.

On stage, Berninger leans into intimate tempos, plainspoken storytelling and that low register that shifts from murmured confession to steady lift. The focus stays on lyrics, mood and small changes in dynamics, with songs unfurling in nocturnal hues.
