The Format

Ben Kweller brings his guitar-forward mix of indie rock, power pop and folk to Toronto, tracing a path from his San Francisco roots and Texas upbringing to a steady solo run that began after his teenage years with Radish. His early albums Sha Sha and On My Way set the tone with sharp melodies and direct songwriting, followed by the self-titled Ben Kweller and the country-tinged detour of Changing Horses, before circling back to a more electric edge on Go Fly a Kite. On stage, he moves easily from crunch to twang, keeping the focus on hooks, harmonies and unvarnished lyrics. Along the way, collaborations like The Bens with Ben Folds and Ben Lee anchored him within a US indie network that bridges pop, rock and americana.
