If you follow today’s jazz, you have certainly come across Brad Mehldau. An American pianist and composer, he has forged a distinctive way of letting post-bop dialogue with classical writing and a distinctly contemporary sense of rhythm. Discovered in the early 1990s alongside Joshua Redman, he subsequently built a territory with albums under his name, from Introducing Brad Mehldau to the Art of the Trio series, where standards and original compositions meet with a rare freedom of tone.
On stage, Mehldau loves both the trio format and solo piano, and his playing moves between counterpoint, clear melodies, and unpredictable re-entries. He has also broadened his universe with more orchestrated projects (Largo, Highway Rider, Finding Gabriel) and notable collaborations, from Pat Metheny to Mark Guiliana.
