Info
On 16 October 2026 at O2 Academy Leeds, two pillars of UK alternative rock share the stage: The Wonder Stuff and Inspiral Carpets. A meeting of sharp songwriting, organ-led grooves and melodies born from the late-80s/90s indie scenes.
Formed in 1986 in Stourbridge around singer-guitarist Miles Hunt, The Wonder Stuff first emerged from the grebo scene alongside Pop Will Eat Itself and Ned’s Atomic Dustbin. Their sound mixes taut guitars and punchy British pop refrains, later folding in folk and country colours via violin and banjo. This trajectory runs through The Eight Legged Groove Machine (1988), Hup (1989), Never Loved Elvis (1991) and Construction for the Modern Idiot (1993), before a return from 2000 onwards with records like Escape from Rubbish Island, Suspended by Stars, Oh No It’s... The Wonder Stuff, 30 Goes Around the Sun and Better Being Lucky.
Oldham’s Inspiral Carpets formed in the early 80s around guitarist Graham Lambert, carving out a place in the Madchester orbit with Clint Boon’s distinctive organ at the core. With Stephen Holt, then Tom Hingley from 1989, the band shaped a direct, melodic approach rooted in garage grit and psych-pop sparkle. Early EPs Planecrash and Trainsurfing led to albums Life (1990), The Beast Inside (1991), Revenge of the Goldfish (1992) and Devil Hopping (1994), before a later return with Inspiral Carpets in 2014.
