Info
On 6 May 2027, Fred Wesley & The New J.B.’s land at Metronome in Nottingham with the kind of funk pedigree that basically wrote the rulebook. As James Brown’s key trombonist, arranger and bandleader, Wesley helped shape that tight, dry, hard-hitting brass language that powered classics like “Say It Loud – I’m Black and I’m Proud” and “Hot Pants,” then carried it into his own band, The J.B.’s, with horn lines and interlocking rhythms built for the dancefloor.
This show is a chance to hear that legacy live, from the punchy grooves of J.B.’s staples like “Pass the Peas” and “Doing It to Death” to the broader universe Wesley explored after James Brown, including his time with George Clinton’s Parliament-Funkadelic. The set also nods to the 50th anniversary of A Blow for Me, a Toot to You, the 1977 album he co-produced with Clinton and Bootsy Collins: a meeting point between deep funk and sharp arranging, still sampled, borrowed from, and chased today.
