Derya Yıldırım sings 'Hop Bico,' an old Anatolian folk standard that her grandmother already performed in her own way. Derya, in turn, offers a reinterpretation, carried by a psychedelic, languid tempo and her enchanting voice. For her, playing a traditional song means bringing something new to it: 'otherwise, you might as well simply listen to the original recording again.'
Born in Hamburg to Turkish parents, she grows up between her family's Anatolian heritage and the city’s cultural diversity. Trained from an early age in traditional music, she learns the bağlama, then the guitar, piano and saxophone. Although a multi-instrumentalist, she remains deeply attached to the sound of the bağlama, which she describes as 'very magical.' With Yarın Yoksa (If There Is No Tomorrow), Grup Şimşek’s forthcoming album, Derya continues her commitment to revitalizing Anatolian folk music by infusing it with a contemporary psychedelic energy during this concert at Bal Chavaux on 10 November 2026 at 6:30 PM.
