Objekt is the stage name of TJ Hertz, a Berlin-based producer and DJ. Born in Tokyo, the son of British-American and Filipino parents, Hertz grew up in Belgium and the United Kingdom before settling in Berlin in 2009. He began to make a name for himself with a series of club records, starting with the 12-inch Objekt #1 and Objekt #2, released independently in 2011. Remixes followed for Radiohead and SBTRKT, as well as releases on dance-music labels such as Hessle Audio. His work as a producer quickly earned critical acclaim and the support of figures such as Aphex Twin and Autechre.
Objekt built a reputation as a DJ of his generation. Voted DJ of the Year by Mixmag in 2018, he feels equally at home in large festival tents as in cramped, sweltering basements. His DJing style combines irreverence and precision, employing a dynamically expressive mixing technique, not bound to genres or BPM, guided by spontaneity and the energy of the crowd. Hertz's performances are unpredictable: on one night he may traverse half a dozen musical genres in search of a party atmosphere; on another, he may lead the audience through a psychedelic tunnel.
