Since their founding, the Downtown Boys have pursued their artistic and political project. Lead singer Victoria Marie and guitarist/vocalist Joey La Neve DeFrancesco met at union meetings while working together at a hotel in Providence, Rhode Island, writing many of the band's early songs about labor organization and exploitation in corporate settings. The quintet is completed by Joe DeGeorge (sax/synth), Mary Jane Regalado (bass), and Joey Doubek (drums). Over years of touring and three albums, the Downtown Boys have continued to grow as artists, musicians, and activists.
Now the band returns with Public Luxury, an album that keeps politics at the forefront while evoking an urgent and powerful sound. The definition of "Public Luxury" aligns with that of the title of their second LP, Full Communism. Public Luxury means "everything for everyone." It is the steadfast insistence that a better world is possible, while fully recognizing the horrors we witness every day, combined with the individual and collective responsibility to resist the nihilism and despair we all feel.
