Born out of late-70s Edinburgh frustration, The Exploited have spent decades turning street-level anger into fast, abrasive punk. Fronted by Wattie Buchan, the band helped define the UK82 strain where street punk collides with hardcore: simple, aggressive riffs, chant-along choruses, and lyrics that don’t dodge the mess of everyday life, from corruption to social collapse.
They first hit hard in 1980 with “Army Life” and “Exploited Barmy Army”, then pushed the scene forward with “Punks Not Dead” (1981), a blunt statement of intent that quickly became a cornerstone of early-80s British punk. “Troops of Tomorrow” followed in 1982, now widely seen as one of the era’s essential records. Across later releases like “Death Before Dishonour”, “Beat the Bastards” and “Fuck the System”, The Exploited kept sharpening their no-compromise approach, edging into heavier crossover territory without losing that raw punk bite.
