Info
DHP presents Early James. Born in 1993 in Troy, Alabama, Fredrick James Mullis Jr. develops under the name Early James a songwriting voice that sits at the crossroads of Americana, folk, blues, alternative country and rootsy rock, with a rasping voice and compositions that blend oblique narratives, dark humor and melodic tension. Based in Birmingham in his early twenties, Early James honed his repertoire in a local scene open to the crossroads of blues, folk and rock, then launched the project Early James and the Latest, built around an evolving core of musicians. After a self-titled debut EP released in 2018, Early James was spotted by Dan Auerbach, who produced his first album Singing for My Supper in 2020 on Easy Eye Sound. The record establishes an acoustic and electric setting where off-kilter ballads, twisted country and dry blues intersect. Early James continued with Strange Time To Be Alive in 2022, notably featuring Sierra Ferrell on “Real Low Down Lonesome,” then with Medium Raw in 2025. Having performed on stages such as the Newport Folk Festival, Early James sits within a revised American tradition without nostalgia, between pared-down folk, nervy rock and distinctive songwriting.
