After more than ten years as merely a side project of a group of friends playing 70s‑inspired hard rock and proto‑metal, Greenleaf finally came into being as a full‑fledged band. Led by guitarist Tommi Holappa, co‑founder of Dozer, one of the pioneering European desert rock bands, Greenleaf went through several lineups in those early years, with members from Lowrider, Truckfighters, Demon Cleaner and Dozer. But after five albums and numerous personnel changes, Tommi began to feel that Greenleaf could be something more. Its evolution from a simple side project into a proper band began when Tommi contacted Arvid Hällagård in 2013 to sing on a new track. Arvid’s first stoner‑rock band, Giant Space Cruiser, had played with Dozer a few years earlier, and Tommi had kept an eye on the vocalist. Along with drummer Sebastian Olsson, who had started out as a substitute but would become Greenleaf’s second‑longest‑serving member after Tommi, they worked on one track and then another, Arvid bringing a vocal direction unlike anything the project had known before. The sense that things had changed was immediate, and what they were creating was an album. Today, Greenleaf performs regularly on the European heavy underground scene. With four albums to their name since they became a proper band, their riff‑driven rock is rooted in desert‑inspired sounds.
