Assassin is a French hip-hop group founded in Paris in the mid-1980s, led by its frontman Rockin’ Squat, a prominent figure in France’s engaged rap. A precursor of conscious and free hip-hop, the group established itself from its early days with uncompromising lyrics, engaged songs, and independent artistic freedom. Assassin was the first French rap group to achieve gold status entirely independently by producing and distributing its music through its own label, Assassin Productions.
The group thereby becomes a reference and an influence within this culture in France and internationally. With more than a million albums sold and tracks that have become cult classics, Assassin has influenced several generations of artists.
