The Wonder Stuff and Inspiral Carpets share the stage at O2 Victoria Warehouse, Manchester, on 2 October 2026. Two bands shaped by the late-80s UK indie wave meet again for a night of sharp hooks, organ swirls and unfussy guitars.
Born in Oldham, Inspiral Carpets grew out of garage grit and psych-pop colour, with Clint Boon’s organ setting the tone. Early singles like Planecrash and Trainsurfing drew the attention of John Peel, before a run on Mute delivered Life, The Beast Inside, Revenge of the Goldfish and Devil Hopping. Their writing leans on tight refrains and propulsive rhythms, closer to the rough edge of Madchester than its baggiest moments. After a 90s split, the band regrouped, returning with a self-titled album in 2014 and Stephen Holt back at the mic.
Formed in Stourbridge, The Wonder Stuff started in the grebo milieu around Miles Hunt, then stretched their sound with folk and country tinges when Martin Bell brought violin and banjo. Between The Eight Legged Groove Machine, Hup, Never Loved Elvis and Construction for the Modern Idiot, the group mapped out a melodic, direct approach that carried into the 2000s with Escape from Rubbish Island, Suspended by Stars, Oh No It’s... The Wonder Stuff, 30 Goes Around the Sun and Better Being Lucky.
