André Rieu und sein Johann Strauss Orchester

André Rieu brings the grand waltz tradition to the stage with his Johann Strauss Orchestra – vibrant, accessible and intimately close to the audience. Since founding the ensemble in 1987, the Dutch violinist and conductor has led it with a sure hand through programmes that blend Viennese waltzes by the Strausses with operetta melodies, film music, popular songs and memorable classical pieces. Rieu is doubly in the spotlight: as soloist with his violin bow and as conductor who steers the orchestra dynamically through the shifts in timbre of the arrangements.

Typical of his concerts: guest singers join the programme, choral passages provide highlights, and the orchestra sounds large while remaining always dance-like. Between pieces there are often brief spoken interludes and spontaneous moments that reduce the distance and engage the audience. The result is a concert flow that relies less on strictness than on melody, rhythm and recognisability—ideal for hearing waltzes anew and experiencing familiar themes afresh.
