Bristol-born quartet The Longest Johns bring maritime folk into the present with tight harmonies, pulsing hand percussion and lean acoustic arrangements. First known for a cappella shanties, they’ve grown their sound without losing the communal pull of voices sung in unison. Their repertoire blends traditional work songs and coastal ballads with originals shaped by sea lore: from early cuts on Written in Salt and Between Wind and Water to Bones in the Ocean and the rough-hewn storytelling of Smoke & Oakum. The viral rise of their Wellerman rendition opened the way to wider tours and collaborations, including links with the game Sea of Thieves, but it’s on stage that their chorus-led energy really lands.
