Info
On July 3, 2026, Chicago outfit Tortoise lands at Théâtre Maisonneuve in Montréal for a set built around their singular approach to instrumental music. Formed in 1990, the quintet of Jeff Parker, Dan Bitney, Douglas McCombs, John Herndon and John McEntire has spent three decades folding jazz phrasing, dub weight, minimalism and electronics into flexible rock frameworks. Their records — from Millions Now Living Will Never Die to TNT and Standards — sketched the contours of post-rock; on stage, the pieces expand and recombine with a calm sense of motion.
Expect shifting roles and a dense palette: interlaced drums, mallet percussion and bass patterns anchoring guitar filigrees, analog synths and subtle samples. Themes surface, repeat and morph, trading linear solos for layered grooves and small frictions that push the music forward. Tortoise tends to thread older material with more recent compositions, letting contrasts in tempo and texture tell the story. The result is a live experience that moves between precision and drift, highlighting pulse, space and tone rather than spectacle — a patient, detailed sound world shaped in real time at Théâtre Maisonneuve in Montréal.
