Opus Kink

With their mutant style blending jazz, country and punk, Opus Kink occupies a singular place in an overcrowded musical landscape. Known for their live performances, the band — formed in Brighton (United Kingdom) in 2017 — has forged a sound that is at once elusive and immediately recognizable. Their music swings from tarantella (St Paul of The Tarantulas), death-disco (This Train) and music-hall (Dust) to a slow, trailing litany (Malarkey).

Propelled by a brass section and a raspy, sarcastic vocal delivery, they sometimes recall post-punk or no wave figures such as The Pop Group, Birthday Party or Lounge Lizards. Yet their distinctiveness lies above all in their ability to weave older, traditional influences — choral singing, folk, country, Latin music, Weimar cabaret and ocean-liner crooners.

Through lyrics haunted by violence, evil, shame, troubled sexualities, anxiety and existential emptiness — always treated with absurd irony — Opus Kink constructs an underworld into which audiences willingly let themselves be drawn.
