Brooklyn Funk Essentials

Brooklyn Funk Essentials returns in live formation on July 2, 2026 at New Morning, Paris. Born in Brooklyn in 1993 around Arthur Baker and Lati Kronlund, the collective forged a hybrid sound in which funk interlocks with acid jazz, soul, jazz, hip‑hop, Latin rhythms, dub and dance. On stage, singers, MCs, brass and the rhythm section answer one another, alternating between club pulses and live playing, with spoken‑word texts woven into pronounced grooves.

Over the years the lineup has shifted without abandoning its identity as an international collective. Their work includes In the BuzzBag, recorded in Istanbul, followed by a recording comeback with Funk Ain’t Ova. Since 2016 the core has notably included the voice of Alison Limerick, the guitar and vocals of Desmond Foster, and the bass of Lati Kronlund. Expect bouncy bass lines, crisp brass riffs and a constant dialogue between musicians and MCs, for a set that draws on multiple scenes without locking itself into a single format.
