Vieux Farka Touré

On 31 May 2026 Vieux Farka Touré will perform at Patronaat in Haarlem. The Malian guitarist and singer from Niafunké builds on Sahel traditions, steering them toward rock accents and a pulsating Afro-pop drive. Since his 2006 debut with Fondo and The Secret he has established a distinct signature: repetitive guitar motifs that slowly unfold, fluid improvisations and melodies rooted in the Songhai tradition.

Live, Touré alternates between an electric band and more stripped-down passages, singing in Malian languages and in French. His recent work colors the set: Les Racines (2022) tightens the lines and draws its strength from traditional structures, while Ali (2022), recorded with Khruangbin, shows his blues in a different guise. Between older pieces and newer themes he builds tension, layer by layer, until the groove takes over.

Guitar and rhythm are central; trance and detail meet in the flow. Without fuss, and with a focus on interplay, Touré demonstrates how the heritage of northern Mali keeps moving — there, at Patronaat, Haarlem.
