Antony Szmierek

Antony Szmierek, poet, author and producer from Manchester, brings his hybrid of spoken word, indie-pop and electronica to Munich. His lyrics chronicle everyday observations, urban vignettes and intimate portraits, delivered with a fluid, almost rap-like sense of timing. Against crisp, well-defined beats melodic refrains unfold and there is ample room for words — a balance he has sharpened since the EP “Poems To Dance To” and distilled on his debut album “Service Station at the End of the Universe.”

Live, Szmierek performs with intimacy and momentum, shifting between narrated passages and hooks, between warm house grooves and a slow hip-hop pulse. Songs like “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Fallacy,” “The Great Pyramid of Stockport,” “Yoga Teacher” and “Angie’s Wedding” demonstrate his mix of storytelling and pop sensibility; newer tracks such as “That Face You Make When It’s Raining” and “Girlypops” broaden the spectrum.
