Formed in Vancouver in 1980, 54-40 built its core around singer-guitarist Neil Osborne and bassist Brad Merritt. Named after the “54-40 or Fight” slogan, the band emerged from the local indie scene with a post-punk and new wave tilt (Set the Fire, 1984), then shifted toward a more melodic alternative rock after moving to a major for 54-40 (1986) and Show Me (1987). Across albums like Dear Dear (1992), Smilin’ Buddha Cabaret (1994) and Casual Viewin’ (2000), they refined guitar-forward songs with clear lines, direct choruses and touches of folk and roots. The arrival of guitarist-keyboardist Dave Genn in the mid-2000s anchored a stable lineup that keeps exploring contemporary rock while staying centered on melody and a reflective tone.
