Le fil voyageur - raconté par Sheila Hicks et Monique Lévi-Strauss

Info

Explore the richness of textile arts through an unprecedented encounter between the craftsmanship of the Andean world and contemporary creations, brought to life by two exceptional women.

Celebrating sixty years of friendship and of creative and intellectual exchange, the exhibition traces the shared passion of two women for textiles from around the globe, enriched by their travels and discoveries. The collaboration between Sheila Hicks, an American artist and pioneer in textile art, renowned for her innovative works and bold explorations of material and color, and Monique Lévi-Strauss, a researcher specializing in the history of non-Western textile arts, highlights the diversity of textile practices and their contemporary reinterpretations.

The exhibition brings together nearly twenty textile pieces from the museum’s collections, alongside about thirty works by Sheila Hicks. Inspired by ancient Andean weavings, her practice offers a fresh reading of the gestures that transform textile matter: knotting, weaving, braiding, twisting, wrapping, binding. Through these encounters, a history of textiles takes shape that crosses borders, civilizations and eras.

A monumental work will welcome visitors at the entrance to the Collections plateau, offering a striking preview of the dialogue between textile heritage and contemporary art.
