ELIE SEMOUN CACTUS: No need to look far to understand the tone of CACTUS! By giving this name to his new show, Elie Semoun signals the color: it’s going to sting! For 30 years, the comedian has established himself as one of the most incisive and deliciously offbeat talents on the French stage. His style, which blends finesse and audacity, has inspired many generations of artists. For his eighth show, Elie Semoun makes a slight shift: stand-up now occupies a more prominent place, a novelty for him. But make no mistake, CACTUS remains faithful to his love of characters. Among the gallery of his new monsters, you will meet Jean Abdul, who will open for him, a son who takes his father to visit a nursing home, Xavier, the wheelchair user who introduces his wife to his mother, a father confronting his son’s transition, a racist karate instructor, or a biting look at sexual harassment and religion. With CACTUS, Elie Semoun offers us a vision that is both deep and light of our society, between violence and inspiration, where the themes of intolerance, taboo and injustice are tackled head-on, but always with that incisive edge that characterizes him.
