Info
John Illsley will perform at the Melkweg in Amsterdam on 20 January 2027 in a concert centered on his own songs and his long career as a songwriter and bassist. As a co-founder of Dire Straits, he helped shape the British rock sound with a sober, tight bassline that always served the overall sound. You can hear the same approach in his solo work, where rock is blended with blues and folk influences, sometimes with a hint of Celtic edge.
Since the 1980s, Illsley has steadily built his own discography, with a renewed focus after the end of Dire Straits in 1995. On albums such as Streets of Heaven, Testing the Water, Long Shadows, Coming Up for Air and VIII, he opts for direct songwriting, strong storytelling and a warm, down-to-earth sound. In concert, you can expect a set that centers on his personal catalog, drawing on the experience of a musician who has known for decades how to let a song breathe.
