Frustration has barely blown out twenty candles when the group is already celebrating another major milestone: the release of its sixth album, Our Decisions. Frustration is the saga of wild children of French rock: restless beginnings within the aptly named Happy Family, the DIY rock crew orbiting around the Parisian record shop Born Bad, to the band’s progressive anchoring in the hexagonal and European underground punk scene, from the rise at the turn of the 2010s to the transformation of the group into a unifying force for all the tribes of rock'n'roll.
A Journey That Never Was, Arthur Satàn’s second solo album, released by Born Bad, reveals what happens when you abandon a child to his fate in a sound studio, let him grow old with only his Warhammer figurines for company, stacked on a pile of old Metal Hurlant magazines, and press pause on time for a few decades. And actually it works: the Bordeaux-born melodist has a whole family of imaginary friends to introduce you to.
Jessica93 on Born Bad is bound to end badly in a beautiful way, we know, but let’s stay calm. Geoffroy Laporte, once again alone against all, performs solo perched on a drum machine with pre-Gulf War patterns. He alternates bass and guitar to build harsh, saturated loops, on which he shouts softly. That’s where it gets tricky: every clan wants him among theirs. Grunge, there is indeed a hint of it, but Jessica is not a necrophage. Punk, certainly, but we’re talking more about the distribution network than about identity. Cold wave, a matter of atmosphere, but he has neither the gear nor the seriousness. The rock horde, self-assured, has heard him sing with his hair in his eyes and seen him play the guitar rather than strum, but he never joined the Party. Metal had something to say, but no one listened. Perhaps it’s time to grant him stylistic peace, and to recognize that Jessica93 has made his own very personal recipe for a comforting broth of bitterness into comforting music.
