On September 20, 2026, at SJQ in London, Tokyo-based composer-producer Koshun Nakao meets London pianist-composer Rieko Makita for their first collaboration: a close-up live set built around piano and ambient sound.
Nakao brings a signature palette where the piano sits inside warm, enveloping textures, shaping slow-moving harmonies and lingering resonance. His approach keeps things minimal but detailed, with timbre and space doing as much work as melody.
Makita, classically trained at the Royal College of Music, moves freely between composition and improvisation, leaning into colour, texture, and shifting dynamics. Her writing often circles ideas of seasons, migration, memory and belonging, and that narrative sensibility comes through even in the most abstract moments.
Together, they blur contemporary classical, ambient, and improvisation, letting the music drift between structured passages and spontaneous interplay, where every small change in touch, tone, and silence becomes part of the conversation.
