Between memory and hybridity, an homage to the women of his family.
Music has its cycles and its refrains. It is made of obsessions. Those that permeate André Manoukian’s records map themselves between the Caucasus and the East. After Anouch in 2022, dedicated to his grandmother, a survivor of the Armenian genocide, he continues the exploration of his family roots with La Sultane, his fifth solo album, where an oriental fragrance and modal jazz mingle.
Jazz, the universal language of exiles—the one that allows all peoples to understand each other beyond the wounds inflicted by History. Each track on his album tells a small piece of life and pays tribute to the women in his family, to their gentleness and their strength. 'My Sultane,' this is how my mother used to call my little sister before smothering her with kisses. A Turkish word to express the overflowing love of Armenian mothers for their daughters.
In this new opus, André Manoukian experiments, improvises, and interweaves classical, traditional, or sacred sounds. His piano becomes his intimate memory, his cultural heritage, a language full of tenderness.
